A new species of carnivorous: Durrell’s vontsira

By Rut López

This finding marks the first new species of carnivorous mammal discovered in the last 24 years. It was described for the first time in 2010 and it was included in the Eupleridae family (the meerkat and mongoose also belong to this family).

The habitat of this new species of carnivorous mammal is Madagascar, the fourth biggest island in the world. This recently discovered animal is an endangered species. The discovery was made by a team of scientists from the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust. They found this carnivorous mammal, approximately the size of a cat, in 2004. They named it Salanoia Durrelli (it is also known as Durrell’s vontsira), after the naturalist Gerald Durrell, brother of the novelist Lawrence Durrell and author of several books about collecting animals.
